How to Register a New Battery on an F-Series BMW

Fitted a new battery? Register it in ISTA so the car stops charging it like the old one, and code the new size in E-Sys if the capacity or type changed. One-page PDF included.

Your BMW keeps a history of its battery. A sensor on the negative terminal, the IBS, tracks charge cycles and wear, and the car adjusts its charging to match. Fit a new battery without telling the car and it keeps charging the new one as if it were the old, worn one. That shortens the life of a battery you just paid for.

The fix is to register the replacement in ISTA. If the new battery has a different capacity or type, you also code the new size in E-Sys first.

Credits Cool

This is based on StillShady's write-up on drive2.ru, where StillShady registered an AGM battery on an F10 525i in 2020. We rewrote it in English, added the module names for other F-series cars and checked the ISTA wording against BMW's service bulletin SI B61 30 14. Thanks to StillShady for sharing it.

Which Case Are You In?

New batteryWhat to do
Same capacity, same typeRegister it in ISTA. Done.
Different capacity, or AGM instead of standard (or the other way round)Code the battery class in E-Sys, then register it in ISTA

Before You Start

  • Photograph the label on the new battery before you fit it. On an original BMW battery, ISTA asks for the numbers next to the QR code, and the boot floor is easier to lift once than twice.
  • Note the capacity and type, for example 90 Ah AGM.
  • Keep a charger on the car while ISTA or E-Sys is connected.

Step 1: Code the Battery Class (Only If It Changed)

The battery class sits in a different module depending on the car:

CarModuleParameter
F10, F01 and other cars with a CASCASVCM_BATTERY_CLASS
F20, F30 and other cars with a FEMFEM_BODYVCM_AEP_BATTERY_CLASS, owners find it under 3210 SfSvdVcmGlobal
F15 and later cars with a BDCBDC_BODYlook for BATTERY_CLASS

The values look like 70agm, 80agm, 90agm and 105agm. If your battery falls between two, pick the one at or just below its real capacity, never above. StillShady's 95 Ah battery went in as 90.

Change the value with Edit FDL and code it with Code FDL, like any other FDL change. Owners also report that the battery is stored in the FA. A later VO coding of that module can put the old value back, so check it again after any VO coding.

Step 2: Register the Replacement in ISTA

  1. Connect ISTA and run a full identification of the car.
  2. Go to Vehicle management → Service functions → Body → Voltage supply → Battery → Register battery replacement. The labels shift a little between ISTA versions.
  3. Look at the mileage of the last battery replacement. If it's blank or ancient, the previous battery was never registered either.
  4. Choose Enter battery replacement: same capacity, or higher/lower capacity if you coded a new class in Step 1.
  5. For an original BMW battery, enter the numbers from the label you photographed. For any other battery, answer no when ISTA asks.

StillShady finished by sending the car to sleep from the same Voltage supply menu. The new values apply once the car wakes up again.

If It Still Misbehaves

Registration resets the history, and that's all it does. If the IBS sensor itself is faulty, it has to be replaced. StillShady's experience was that a bad IBS rarely comes back to life. And if a new battery keeps going flat, look for something drawing current with the car asleep, aftermarket dashcams and trackers first.

FAQ

Can E-Sys register the battery?

No. E-Sys can code the battery class, but registering the replacement is an ISTA job. Some phone apps, such as BimmerLink, can register a battery too.

Do I need to register a battery of the same size?

Yes. The size didn't change, but the history did. Without registration, the car still thinks the battery is the old one.

What happens if I code a bigger battery than I fitted?

The car charges it as if it were bigger than it is. Pick the class at or below the real capacity.

The one-page PDF attached to this post has both tables and the ISTA path, to keep with your coding laptop. Setting one up? Start with our coding laptop guide, or I can do it remotely.
