F30 Enhanced Bluetooth Coding: 6NK, 6NS or BimmerCode

Basic Bluetooth (6NH) on your F30? If a combox is fitted, coding adds music streaming. Pick 6NK, 6NL or 6NS, or use the BimmerCode list.

Plenty of F30s, F31s and F32s left the factory with basic Bluetooth, option 6NH. Calls work, music streaming doesn't. On many of these cars the hardware for enhanced Bluetooth is already fitted, and it's a coding job. On others it isn't, and no amount of coding will help. Here's how to tell which car you have and what to code.

Credits Cool

This comes from two F30post threads, People who coded 6NH to 6NK Bluetooth Audio and Enhanced Bluetooth Audio coding using BimmerCode. Frogman and shawnsheridan worked out the combox rules, ChubbyWilly explained why CIC cars need 6NK, Bestia posted the BimmerCode list and Sulis and cbm88 fixed it. Thanks to all of them.

Step 1: Check the Hardware

Enhanced Bluetooth needs a combox. Where it lives depends on the head unit.

NBT head unit. The combox is built in, so you're fine.

CIC or Entry head unit. You need a separate combox in the boot. Lift the boot floor all the way. The fuses are at the back on the right, and the combox is at the back on the left, a silver box with cooling fins. If there's just an empty space there, you don't have one.

You can also check in E-Sys. Read the SVT and look for HU_NBT or CMB_MEDIA. If you see CMB_ECALL as well, you have the telematics combox, and that changes the option code.

Your carOption codeModules to VO code
NBT (HU_NBT)6NSHU_NBT
CIC with CMB_MEDIA in the boot6NKHU_CIC and CMB_MEDIA
CIC with CMB_ECALL too6NLHU_CIC and the combox
CIC or Entry with no comboxNot possible with coding

Don't use 6NS on a CIC car. int coded 6NS on a Canadian F30 and the phone menu disappeared completely. Switching to 6NK fixed it. boweld11 tried 6NS on a car with no combox at all and got the same empty phone menu.

Step 2: VO Code It With E-Sys

VO coding works with plain E-Sys, without a token.

  1. In Expert Mode → Coding, read the FA and save a copy.
  2. Open it in the FA editor. Delete 6NH and add your new code. Keep the options in alphabetical order.
  3. Click Calculate FP, check for errors, save, and write the FA to the car.
  4. Read the FA again, click Activate FA and Read SVT.
  5. Right-click the head unit (the module itself, not the CAFD under it) and choose Code. Do the same for CMB_MEDIA if you have one.
  6. Delete the phone from iDrive, delete the car from the phone's Bluetooth list, and pair them again.

VO coding puts the head unit back to factory coding, so redo any FDL changes you had in it. If E-Sys stops with a CAFD error, see CAFD not found. One owner hit exactly that after the dealer replaced the head unit.

The BimmerCode Route (NBT Only)

BimmerCode can't VO code. On an NBT car you can still get the same result by setting the head unit lines one at a time, from a list Bestia posted in 2017. Bestia had copied it from another member's 2014 car. Owners got it working on a 2014 320d Touring and a 2013 420d Coupe. On cdwalls's F32 some lines were missing and it didn't fully work.

Bestia's list leaves two lines off. Set SYSTEM_TTS and CE_DEVICE_SPEECH_RECOGNITION to aktiv, or the voice button on the steering wheel stops working. Three owners caught that one.

Everything else in group 3003 TELEFON_TELEMATIK_ONLINE goes to aktiv: ADRESSBOOK, API_MP4_ON_OFF, AUDIO_PLAYER_ON_OFF, BLUETOOTH_2ND_HFP, BT_MODUL_ON_OFF, CALENDAR_EIN_AUS, CE_DEVICE_SPEECH_RECOGNITION, CONTACT_BOOK_PICTURES, CONTACTS_EIN_AUS, DATACOMM_CSIM, EMAIL_EIN_AUS, ENT_BTAS_METADATA, EXTERNAL_CALL_LISTS, MACRO_PIM, PHONE_CONFERENCE_CALL, PIM_BILDER_EIN_AUS, REMINDER_EIN_AUS, SMS_EIN_AUS, SWUP_SOURCE_USBMSCDD, TASK_EIN_AUS, TEXT_NOTES_EIN_AUS and TWO_PHONES_PARALLEL.

Sulis's tips from doing it: many lines are already right, so check each one rather than assuming. The 3003 lines aren't in alphabetical order in the app, so expect to scroll. When you code, the engine may cut out and restart and the head unit reboots. That's normal. Then delete the pairing on both sides and pair again. Until Sulis did that, nothing had changed.

If you've already coded video in motion or USB video, some values will look different from the list. It was made on a car without them.

FAQ

Does this add BMW Apps too?

No. BMW Apps is a separate option, and it needs a paid FSC code on top of the coding.

I hear a whine with Bluetooth audio selected and nothing playing.

steve@codemybimmer had the same thing. The suggestion in the thread was to turn the volume down on the phone, to about half.

The attached one-page PDF has the option table and the full BimmerCode list. More guides are under Coding, or I can do it remotely.
